I've heard that many community theatres have done bits of musicals, but not everything, therefore, they're non-royalty productions. I really want to direct a mini version/bit of "Legally Blonde: The Musical." Like, just do some dialogue and at least 4-5 numbers? Is it possible or would I still have to buy the rights?Would you have to buy rights to direct a mini version of a musical?I work as the Operations Manager for a Theatre Company and last year we discussed doing a Show Case of Broadway Music - So I contacted Music Theatre International (www.mtishows.com) to ask how we do this since they own the rights to all the good shows.

You have to contract the rights for each show, request, in writing, to only perform particular songs, and wait to hear back. Unless you have a huge budget, this is hard to accomplish, so we decided against it. You could get the sheet music from http://www.musicnotes.com/ - a site we have used for audition sheet music, and do it without a contract, but be careful - the fines for doing this, if caught are astronomical!

Because Legally Blonde is so popular right now and because it is still touring the rights are still restricted.

Good Luck!
