I have a 94 Mini mayfair 1.3 carb and want to give it a bit more poke, it has the stage one kit on it already but its not enough. Arguably the vtec is the dogs b*ll*cks of engine conversions but who has 拢6,000 spare. How much would a head conversion cost?Any ideas how much it would cost to have a BMW K1 Head Conversion done on my mini mayfair?Be careful with this sort of thing. Work on the head and manifolds alone can make the engine horrible - peaky and inflexible. Whatever you do try to avoid a hot cam as that will make your life a misery.
You will almost certainly not get the thing you want which is probably more midrange torque. As the car is a few years old, I woudl think about getting it bored out a bit. A few more cc will make a world of difference. I am out of touch with those old a series derivatives, but if there is a larger engine or a metro engine you might be able to fit that woudl be an easy solution.
Personally, I woudl get it bored out to 1.5 or so and get a single 40 dellorto carb with fairly small chokes (38mm?) and a good tubular exhaust. You don't need a dustbin back box - something failry unrestrictive can give you low back pressure and a discrete throaty sound without annoying the neighbours all the time.
You might want to think about uprating the brakes too as you might be needing to stop fast as well!
If you want a guide on the work you can do on this sort of engine, Get A Graham Bell's book "Performance tuning in theory and practice - four strokes". It is out of print but you can get it on ebay or amazon for not much money.
If you are thinking of doing anything costing thousands, sell the mini and get an old one owner impreza turbo with a few miles on it (there are some good ones out there), as that will be much more fun, reliable and a whole lot faster than the mini!
