Put each machine into the same Homegroup or Workgroup, and give each one a manually-selected IP address of the type, 10.0.0.XXX, where each one gets a different number between 10 and 100 in place of "XXX". A Network Switch with 8 ports can be acquired for under $100, and the cables around a few dollars a foot, depending on the retailer. Shop around, and you can get the switch for less than half that, and less than a dollar per foot for the cables.
