I had always thought that a Dell mini-tower would be the smaller of the two models but as I was browsing around looking for memory, I found a web page on Dell's site and whenever I clicked on mini-tower, the larger version would show up and vice versa. Am I looking at this wrong? Is the larger one actually the "Mini-tower"? If so, why? How would a person (me) find out what version they have (mini-tower or desktop?) Thanks! What is the difference between a Dell OptiPlex Desktop and a Dell OptiPlex Mini-tower?OptiPlex models from Dell come in "several" versions (depending on series) !
Look here @ the OptiPlex 360 (A "two" models version): http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro鈥?/a>
In the description of the two, the Mini Tower is on the left and the Desktop on the right.
- Desktop: Slimmer than Mini Tower with same increase in productivity.
- Mini Tower: Designed for expanded ports to increase productivity.
Look here @ the OptiPlex 960 (A "three" models version): http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro鈥?/a>
This model is added to the lineup:
- Small Form Factor: Super slim design for saving space in your work area.
On the picture of the three, the Mini Tower is on the left, the Desktop on the right and the Small Form Factor (SFF) is perched on the Desktop.
Look here @ the OptiPlex 760 (a "four" models version): http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro鈥?/a>
It adds this model to the lineup:
- Ultra Small Form Factor: Smallest Form Factor for Saving Space in Your Work Area.
On the picture of the four (from left to right), are the Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF), the Small Form Factor (SFF), the Desktop and the Mini Tower.
There are other variations and you can check them here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/cat鈥?/a>
So now you see that the "Mini" in tower is JUST in reference to "Medium" and "Full" towers NOT because it is the smallest.

Hope this helpsWhat is the difference between a Dell OptiPlex Desktop and a Dell OptiPlex Mini-tower?Mini tower or MT would be the regular size chassis. Desktop tower or slim tower would have the same height as MT but would be very thin. Because of this feature any add on cards which can be used in it would be of low profile or half size. if you want to know more visit http://support.dell.com
