I have a 5 gallon filtered tank. Is it big enough for an algae eater/ a shrimp, and a mini goldfish or two? What is the smallest fish tank you could have 1-3 mini goldfish, and an algae eater and/ or a shrimp?Goldfish require a ten gallon tank at a bare minimum, no matter how small they are or how few you have.
After that, assume you will need 2 gallons of water volume per inch of goldfish body (not including fins) in the tank. So three 2-inch goldfish would need 12 gallons at a minimum. This is assuming your tank is well filtered and is fully cycled. This should be considered a minimum...more water volume is always better, and you will need to plan on moving them to a larger tank once they have outgrown their current one.
There is no such thing as a "mini-goldfish". Goldfish can become dwarfed by keeping them in tanks that are too small or not well maintained, but these are not mini-goldfish. These are goldfish that have become deformed through stunted growth. They will have a much shorter lifespan and will be more vulnerable to disease.
Shrimps are not a good idea for goldfish tanks, as the goldfish will almost certainly make a meal out of them. The only crustaceans I have had any luck keeping with goldfish are Fiddler Crabs. I have kept some in my tank for over a year, and the goldfish seem to ignore them (and they are too weak to harm the goldfish). Just make sure they have plenty of places to hide. And Fiddler crabs will require aquarium salt (which is good for goldfish anyway).
Algae eaters are a bad idea as well. They will eventually discover that the goldfish's slime coat tastes good, and start feeding on it, which will stress the goldfish and make it vulnerable to illness and infection.|||Goldfish aren't "mini"...small Goldfish grow into larger ones. 3 Goldfish should be in at least a 40 gallon tank with a filter. What is the smallest fish tank you could have 1-3 mini goldfish, and an algae eater and/ or a shrimp? No, the 5 gallon is NOT big enough. You will need at least a 20 gallon tank for that amount of fish. Goldfish get big. If you were to go to Wal Mart or PetCo or PetSmart and get a 33 cent comet goldfish and put it in a pond, it would grow to over 2 feet in length! Also, goldfish are messy and produce a lot of waste. By the way, Chinese algae eaters are mean guys; they can and will suck on the side of the gold fish and can easily eat the slime coat off and kill the gold fish. Go with the shrimp until the goldfish is big enough to eat the shrimp. Also, goldfish are great scavengers.|||nope your tank isn't big enough for that many fish.....goldfish get big.
I had 2 goldfish and a pleco inside of my 10 gallon tank and the goldfish ate the pleco. Goldfish are semi-aggressive if you get an algae eater make sure you keep an eye on your goldfish, maybe you should just stick to 1 goldfish and maybe a shrimp, or you could try a snail. What is the smallest fish tank you could have 1-3 mini goldfish, and an algae eater and/ or a shrimp?Their is no such thing as a mini goldfish, they all grow. but i think u r talking about a fancy goldfish. and by algae eater i think u mean a Plecostomus? Shrimp aren't a good idea to have w/ goldfish, but if u give plenty of hiding spots it is possible.
1 goldfish w/ a plecostomus - 25 gallon
2 goldfish w/ a plecostomus - 35 gallon
3 goldfish w/ a plecostomus - 45 gallon
1 goldfish w/ a plecostomus and 5 shrimp - 30 gallon
2 goldfish w/ a plecostomus and 5 shrimp - 40 gallon
3 goldfish w/ a plecostomus and 5 shrimp - 50 gallon
Do not put a comet goldfish or a koi in any of these aquariums. they r pond fish only. if u wanted one of these in an aquarium the aquarium wud have to be really big.
Never Ever put a goldfish in a 5 Gallon tank! in a 5 Gallon tank u cud have,
2 Guppies and 3 Shrimp, Guppies r very pretty, i have some in my ten Gallon
1 Betta fish and 4 shrimp, Betta fish ussually get along w/ shrimp if u give the shrimp a hiding place, it depends on ur Betta. a Betta wud be perfect for a 5 gallon tank! and they r very beautiful and have a lot of personality.
3 Platies, and 3 Shrimp,
4 Neon Tetras and 3 Shrimp.
That's about it for a 5 Gallon, i really recommend a Betta tho. Never put a plecostomus in a 5 Gallon. They can get very large and r for bigger tanks only. u can't even put one in a 10 Gallon.
Goldfish r very messy and produce alot of waste, so they need more room then most fish unlike what people advertise. if u put even just one goldfish in a 5 gallon it wud die from ammonia poisoning. that's why w/ a goldfish u need 20 gallons of water for one then plus 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. goldfish r one of the messiest fish out there and shud never be kept in a bowl as they need filtration and there is not such thing as a 20 gallon bowl. and a Betta fish shud not be kept in a bowl either. they need filtration and a heater and at least 3 gallons of water, but do better w/ 5 gallons or more.
