I have the stuff on my mini for the new pidgin, i just dont know how to take out the old and put in the new. Usually we install straight from the distribution's repositories, and all the needed packages and dependencies are downloaded automagically. Anyways... To uninstall the pidgin you have, use the synaptic package manager which is available in many Linuxes. Find pidgin and mark it for removal, then click "Apply". To install a new pidgin you should also use synaptic, or the software center (they basically do the same things). By the way you can also install without un-installing first, and the old version will be upgraded. If you insist on installing from the local disk and not the repositories, read on... If you're using Ubuntu, and you downloaded a *.deb package, you can right-click the package and choose "Install with GDebi" to install locally from the drive. If you're using Fedora, and you downloaded a *.rpm package, you can open up a terminal window and run the command 'su', then give the super user password when you're prompted for it, and then run the command: yum localinstall <package_name> If you downloaded a *.repo file for Fedora, you need to copy it to /etc/yum.repos.d and then run the 'su' command as described above and then the command: yum install pidgin If you're using another Linux then there is a good chance that one of the above methods will work for it, otherwise tell us which Linux you have 'cause it's hard to guess. If you downloaded a source code package (a *.tar.bz2 or a *.tar.gz package), you can't install it yourself so use the repositories. The right thing to do is to use the repositories anyways, never install locally.
