What problems am i expected to face with a Mini Cooper Sports (2000), milage at 38,000? Any info about the car would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. What are common problems i should expect to face with a classic mini?As already said, rust is the main thing. Look (poke with screwdriver) at the inner and outer sills, around the subframe mounts in the boot, footwells, panel under windscreen, A panels by the wing and under the headlights. The later mini's are apparently worse for rust unfortunately. Keep it in a garage.
The late mini's had big 13" wheels which are known to eat wheel bearings so listen for crunching and check for play wobbling the wheel at 12:00 and 6:00 when jacked up.
Oil leaks are common (if its not leaking oil its not a mini!) most likely place is the seal on the gear change connecting rod.
The rubber cone springs need replacing periodically because they sag, especially at the front and on later models with more stuff crammed under the bonnet. If the ride looks a bit low (top arm close to the bump stops on the subframe), look through the hole in the towers on the front subframe to see the rubber springs and the trumpet that fits into them. If they look too squashed (they should be cone shaped) or you can't see the lip of the trumpet because its been pushed into the rubber, they need replacing.
Rear drum brakes often seize up and fail, check for brake fluid around the drums or take drums off and check under the rubber of the wheel cylinders for fluid. Check the handbrake cable hasn't seized where it splits on back floor or going into the drum.
Engine steadies and subframe mountings wear out fairly quickly. If the car feels a bit loose when you accelerate quickly, check the rubber mountings at the bottom of subframe onto the shell, bar from bulkhead to engine, bottom of engine, teardrop mounts on shell at front and rubber between the bulkhead and tower on subframe.
